January is Rotary Awareness month.  The rollout of our PR campaign comes at an appropriate time. Our TV ads are running as we speak! I urge you to wear your Rotary pin all the time and to share your Rotary story with your friends, your neighbors and your community. Our total membership is 1844, up from 1813 on July 1st.  Hats off to our leaders in membership growth:  Boise Centennial, up 23% (3 new members); Nampa, up 14% (8 new members); and Idaho Falls, up 10% (16 new members)!  The goal of the $15,000 PR grant we received from Rotary International is to increase our numbers 3.5% by June 2015.  That’s 64 net new members.

TV SPOTS UNDERWAY
Our Public Image Grant is off and running! As you will recall, our District PR Committee received a $15,000 Public Image Grant from Rotary International. Matched with an additional

$5,000 from our District, we've purchased 1600 TV ads to appear this month and into February. The goal of the campaign is to increase membership of the District by 3.5% by June 30, 2015. Check out the new website we built just for the campaign - see the map on the "Find a Club" tab and check out the link to your club....you may be surprised what you see! Go to http://www.idahorotary.org. By the way, the video on the website is one of the ones we're using on the TV. A special thanks goes out to Kristin Dudley of Boise Rotary who provided free web hosting and much knowledge!
DISTRICT GOVERNORS ARE GENEROUS!
Incomming D.G. Rick Philips reports from the annual International Assembly in San Diego about a special challenge made last year by current RI President Ron Burton. He challenged all 530 District Governors around the world to be the "First Class" in which all DGs made a contribution to the Foundation (Apparently it had never been done) . Well, they did it! It was announced that the DGs had contributed $750,000. Congratulations!

More amazingly, incomming RI Presdident Gary Huang challenged the next class of DGs (Rick's class) to be "Best Class". Right there at the Assembly, they ALL contributed for a grand total of $1,085,000. Way to go DGs!
YOUTH EXCHANGE AND MCCALL WINTER CARNIVAL
Join the Rotary Youth Exchange students and committee as they gather in McCall January 23rd through 26th for the McCall Winter Carnival.
There will be 16 inbound students, 17 newly accepted outbound students and some rebound students to help with training. The students will enjoy skiing at Brundage Resort on Friday followed by swimming at Zimms Hot Springs.  On Saturday the students will be featured in the Winter Carnival Parade followed by training for the outbound students.  This annual trip is a high point for the exchange students.  It is the first gathering of the youth exchange group since the acceptance of the outbound students who were interviewed in Buhl in November.

(Just got this from Ruth Loza in Croatia!  "Oh my Lord Jim, it's amazing! I never believed it would be anything like this. Everyday is an adventure, whether it's big or small. I can't thank you guys enough for helping me get here.")

Join the fun! Come to McCall and support the McCall Rotary Club as they sell their famous chorizos and beads! This is their major fundraiser of the year. Typcially, they'll make about $30,000 which all goes back into community programs!

RE-PURPOSE ROTARIAN MAGAZINES
Re-purpose your Rotarian Magazines while spreading the word about Rotary!!

Every Rotarian receives the Rotarian magazine each month.  Rather than recycling it in a bin, consider an effective way to share Rotary's mission and great works:  Re-purpose it!!
Use the Word template found on D5400's website (under "Best Practices" tab) and a pack of Avery 2x4" mailing labels.
Print the labels with the supplied Word document.  Place the label over your personal address.
Here are some ideas of where to distribute these re-purposed magazines!
(Ask for permission to distribute in waiting rooms):

  • Give a copy to your weekly guest speaker
  • Give a copy to all guests (perhaps along with your club’s membership brochure!)
  • Doctor offices
  • Dentist offices
  • Salons
  • Oil change companies
  • Any waiting area!!

This is an excellent way to distribute quality reading material, and educate people about Rotary!!

TREASURERS BE SURE TO SEND IN FOUNDATION MONEY!
Before you know it, District Conference will be upon us and clubs will be vying for District awards. One of the criteria fo awards is how a club is porogressing toward its Foundation goals. Here's the deal: if a club has reached 75% of its goal as of March 31, 2014, they will be considered to have reached their goal. (The Foundation year doesn't actually end until June 30). But here's a problem - we've noticed that in the case of many clubs, Treasurers aren't very good about submitting donations received to the Foundation in a timely manner. Please be sure to submit all donations in plenty of time to be recorded by RI by March 31. It would be a shame for a club to fail to score well in the awards because their Treasurer was sitting on the money! Here's an idea - get members to sign up for Rotary Direct - that solves everything!
BOISE CENTENNIAL'S UNIQUE "TEST DRIVE ROTARY" FOR NEW MEMBERS
Although one of the smallest clubs in the District with just 13 members, Boise Centennial Rotary Club has developed a unique membership program called "Test Drive Rotary". Club President, Doug Pill, has offerred a description of the program which you can find on our District website under "Best Practices". Basically, the program offers membership to a prospect and eliminates the financial burden by paying that person's dues and meals for three months. The new member is expected to achieve certain levels of attendance and participation.

"Our Club wants to ensure that new members find that “Service Above Self” is a mutual fit.   The Club’s culture, focus and mission should foster a long term relationship.  For this reason, Boise Centennial Rotary Club has developed the “Test Drive Rotary” program allowing for an opportunity for select new members to understand what Rotary International and Boise Centennial Rotary are about. "

Boise Centennial meets at 7:00 AM on Thursdays at the Riverside Hotel. The club was chartered in 2007 and has a brand new sharp-looking website.
KNOW WHERE THAT CRUISE RAFFLE MONEY GOES?
As we approach District Conference, you'll remember that everyone is encouraged to participate in our raffle program. We sell tickets for $10.00 and the winner gets a $4500 cruise....and whoever sells the ticket also gets the $4500 cruise! At our mid-winter meetings DG Marianne thought we should know where that money goes. So, here's the deal:
  • 50% goes to the Foundation through matches to our member's contributions
  • 25% goes to our Youth Exchange Program
  • 25% is rebated to the clubs to help defray the costs FOR THOSE WHO ATTEND THE CONFERENCE (caps for emphasis!)
Last year, our raffle campaign grossed about $46,000!
ROTARY DIRECT IS A NO-BRAINER
All of us do our best to support the Rotary Foundation and Polio Plus. Some of us contribute when our club President hounds us; some of us pay it with our club dues; and a few of us do it the easy way through Rotary Direct. Rotary Direct allows a Rotarian to contribute to the Foundation by auto-pays from your bank account or credit card. You can sign up for any amount, monthly, quarterly, annually. And, if you charge it to your credit card, you get your points, too! Just think, if we all did that our annual giving to the Foundation at the District level would go off the charts! And, our club Treasurers would be very grateful! To sign up, go the Rotary.org website and you'll find a button on the upper right side of the screen called "GIVE". Or, even simpler yet, just click here.
