WHY GO TO DISTRICT CONFERENCE?

LUPTON TO SPEAK AT DISTRICT CONFERENCE

This year's Rotary District Conference features FCS Urban Ministries Founder Dr. Robert Lupton, author of Toxic Charity: How Churches and Charities Hurt Those They Help (and How to Reverse It).

Bob has invested 46 years in inner-city Atlanta. He left a budding business career to work with delinquent urban youth. He and his family sold their suburban home and moved into the inner-city where they have lived and served as neighbors among those in need, dedicating his life to rebuilding urban neighborhoods where families can flourish and children can grow into healthy adults.

Bob is a community developer, an entrepreneur who brings together communities of resource with communities of need. Through a non-profit organization he founded, he has developed three mixed-income subdivisions, organized two multi-racial congregations, started a number of businesses, created housing for hundreds of families, and initiated a wide range of human services in his community. He is the author of six books, including the best-selling Toxic Charity. Bob has a PhD in psychology from the University of Georgia.

The scholarship will be funded with $15,000 of District Designated Funds (DDF) with matching $15,000 from the Rotary Foundation World Fund. This will be District 5400’s first endeavor to fund a global grant scholar, so we will be working through the process and making any necessary adjustments as we move forward in subsequent years.

MEMBERSHIP MATTERS

Please take a moment to view this video by DGN Jennifer Deroin regarding Membership relevance and vibrancy.

We just had our President Elect Training several weeks ago and the new President Elects set their goals for the upcoming year 2017-2018.   One way to meet the goals of expanding membership is to survey your members to determine their level of engagement in your club and what changes may be necessary to enhance the Rotary experience.  Here is a link to a survey to use. Feel free to connect with Marie Baker if you have questions on how to conduct the survey electronically.

Take the time to reach out to those in your club who are interested in membership and have them register for the Club Training in Twin Falls or Boise.  We will be discussing recruitment, engagement, and retention of Rotary members.

ROTARY NIGHT AT THE ZOO

Save the date of May 4th for the second Rotary Night at the Zoo.  The decision to host a second zoo night was based partially on the fund raising success of last year's event which brought in $6,800 for a global grant supporting Gorongosa Restoration Project in Mozambique but in larger part on a desire to recreate a night of Rotary fellowship amongst the flora and fauna of Zoo Boise which draws over 350,000 visitors annually.  It's an ideal opportunity to show family members, coworkers and anyone interested in Rotary an opportunity to see first hand some of the projects supported by local Rotary clubs.

THREE BOISE CLUBS LAUNCH GREENBELT PROJECT - BUY A BRICK NOW!
After two years of groundwork, three Boise clubs kicked off the "Rotary Park on the Greenbelt" on April 1st. This is a collaborative effort the Boise Metro, Boise Centennial and Eagle/Garden City clubs. The park will be built on the new section of Boise River Greenbelt, which is the last section within the city limits for this Greenbelt project that has been underway for 50 years. The main feature of the Park will be the "Lugenbeel Monument", one of the few surviving historic monuments placed around Idaho in the 1930s by the Sons and Daughters of the Idaho Pioneers. In addition to funds provided by foundations and sponsors, the clubs will be selling commemorative bricks. A special Rotary brick is available! For more information, and the brick order form, visit the Metro website here.  Click here to go directly to the brick order form.

BOISE DOWNTOWN STARTS SATELLITE
The Boise Club has not necessarily been focusing on inducting younger members but many of the prospective members are in their 20s, 30s and 40s.  They are starting out in their careers and would like the opportunity of meeting a mentor, but getting away at lunchtime is not easy.  Especially for a meeting that lasts 1 ½ hours.  Add to that the cost of dues and lunches and the club was out of reach.
Asking those potential members when they could meet would generally the answer was “after work.”  So the Board of Directors, along with other members, put their heads together and decided that an after work meeting would do a service for all.

The first meeting of the Boise Satellite Evening Club was March 16th.  A dozen or so enthusiastic potential members came out for information about Rotary along with adult beverages.  Many had never heard about Rotary and the good we do in the community and the world.  Many questions were asked and interest showed on all their faces.

POCATELLO GATE CITY ROCKS FOUNDATION GIVING
The Pocatello-Gate City club is an 'opt-out' club for Foundation giving. In other words, club members are automatically billed $25 quarterly, to support the Foundation. They must let our treasurer know if they don't want to participate. Our club's Foundation Chair, Walt Jones, and I decided to honor the Foundation Centennial by asking club members to give an additional $26.50 above their normal giving to 'match' the initial contribution given by Arch Klumph to start the Foundation.

We had a great response from club members choosing to honor that $26.50 match. But what was even more special about this effort was that one of our club members, past District Governor Jim Johnston, wanted to make sure 100% of our club's 62 members were represented in the match; he made up any shortfall and contributed the extra amount needed to reflect 100% participation. We are so honored and blessed to have Jim as part of the Pocatello-Gate City club, who sincerely epitomizes the heart of what it means to be a Rotarian and living out the motto, "Service Above Self."

I have attached a photo of an award clock given to Jim as a token of our thanks and appreciation for his selflessness. He's an example to us all.

NAMPA AIDS SALVATION ARMY
The Rotary Club of Nampa gave some love recently to the Salvation Army Nampa Community Family Shelter. With leadership from Marie Baker, 13 club members plus family members spent an evening making improvements to the playground and grounds.
The project include spreading bark donated by WP Insurance, donation and construction of two picnic tables and a bench, repairing an existing bench, and cleaned up the grounds.

On April 4, the club will serve lunch at the shelter.

D.G.E. TERRY JONES ON PETS
To all those who attend PETS this year – you did a bang up job of learning.  This year’s PETS was under the direction of Dr. Bob Lee. What a professional!  He brought in people like Marie Baker on Membership, Marianne Barker on Foundation, Rhea Allen on Public Image, Todd Fisher and John Lodal on youth programs, Russell Johnson on the Ups and Downs of club leadership, Mike Sieler on After being a President and with a sprinkle of your District leadership thrown in.

The presenters were able to use group interaction to surface ideas and concepts that were shared with all that attended.  This interaction made it possible for your class of leaders to get acquainted, share ideas and expand their Rotary knowledge.  I am confident that this class is ready to take the reins and Ride for the Brand.

My special thanks to Bob Lee our District Trainer who did a masterful job of putting together the platform for this year’s PETS.  The comments from the participants were “A job well done”.
Rotary: Making a difference - now let’s get ’er done.

RYLA CAMP AUG 3 - 6
Every summer, 100 teenagers from around Idaho share a long weekend at the College of Southern Idaho for an intensive four day leadership camp.  High school students who are incoming juniors to outgoing seniors are sponsored by Rotary clubs to attend the camp, with the Rotary club paying the $375 cost.  The Rotary Youth Leadership Award camp, RYLA, is "For Youth, By Youth", meaning the camp is planned and lead by students who have previously attended.  The camp is experiential; activities are hands-on and interactive, we avoid classroom style lectures.

The leadership training focuses on everyday leadership.  To lead, you must believe in your own abilities. Being a leader means you work with others; seeing the world through their eyes.  In the process, many life long friendships have been made. The RYLA experience is focused on guiding the students to discover a strong sense of confidence in oneself and expressing empathy for others, which is driven through the strong supportive environment created during the long weekend.  RYLA allows these one hundred teenagers to identify and celebrate their abilities.  In the process, many life long friendships have been made.

Applications and brochures are available on the District Website.
