August is Rotary Membership Month
August is when we focus on membership growth, but every month should be membership month. Ensuring that Rotary has many helping hands is important to our towns and to communities around the world. We need to find and keep Rotarians that have Rotary in their hearts.
I want to ask every Rotarian to determine what you can do to keep the great Rotarians that you have in your clubs. I also ask you to look to the community to find leaders that should be part of Rotary. In both of these cases, engagement in Rotary is the key. When we keep current members engaged and get new members engaged, Rotary is clearly better for it.
Finally, I would ask every club to see how your club can be more vibrant, relevant, and welcoming. The Rotary rules for how a club operates have been changed. It is the club’s decision to determine attendance, meeting time and dates, and fee structure. Please look at how your club operates with the goal to make it more vibrant, relevant, and welcoming.
Please welcome TJ Adams as the District’s Executive Assistant. TJ is an active member of the Emmett Club and has been their President. The District leadership is very happy to have TJ on the team. She will take care of the day-to-day financial operations of the District. She also helps the District Governor and Committees with logistics. We also hope she can be the “corporate memory” for the District so we can better understand how we have done things in the past. TJ’s email is: tjadams@rotary5400.org.
We would also like to thank Darl Bennett for his service and in helping to make the transition a smooth one.
For the second consecutive year Pocatello's Gate City Rotary Club will transform Pocatello and Chubbuck into a sea of breeze-waving black flags supporting the Idaho State University Bengals every ISU home football Saturday.
Last year more than 400 homes and businesses took part in the program and the club would like to double that number this year.
Every Saturday that ISU plays a home football game club members, along with other volunteers, post the flags at residences and businesses that participate.
This month, Rotarians throughout the district are welcoming 17 exchange students from around the world. And at the same time, they will say farewell to 15 of our Idaho students who depart for a year abroad. For the 2016-17 year, these exchanges span 13 countries: Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, and Taiwan.
During the last weekend of August, the District 5400 Youth Exchange committee is holding its annual Inbound Orientation Retreat in Ketchum for the Inbound students, with several club Youth Exchange Officers and Counselors in attendance as well. This time will be used to get to know our new visitors and help them with their efforts acclimate to their new home. And while District 5400 organizes this event, each of our exchange partners will be providing a similar experience for each of Idaho students going abroad.

The Rotary Foundation will mark a century of enabling Rotarians to “do good in the world” in June of 2017. Let’s celebrate by the 100s in District 5400: 100% of clubs achieve their Annual Fund goals, 100% of clubs support PolioPlus, clubs become 100% Paul Harris Fellow Clubs, and more. I urge all Rotarians to participate in 100 acts of good throughout the year, letting others know by posting photos of yourself on social media, along with a brief description of the act, using #100actsofgood. Let’s make giving fun!

While we will celebrate 100 years of Rotary in Idaho next year, its also important to note the the Rotary Foundation is also celebrating 100 years. You'll be seeing lots of publicity about these Centennial events. Our district is designing a special logo and pin for the occasion. The Rotary Foundation has already released its 100th year logo. Be sure to use it as appropriate. you can find it in Rotary Club Central.

The magic of RYLA is due to the camp leaders - for youth, by youth. Each year a handful of the campers from the previous year return to RYLA as the camp's junior leaders. In a similar way, a couple of the junior leaders return as the camp senior leaders. Rotarian mainly work behind the scenes to get everything ready; making sure the junior and senior leaders are trained, and then we watch the magic happen. Thanks to the 28 clubs who are sponsoring 71 students to attend RYLA 2016 August 4th - 7th at the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls.

Would you like more members in your club? Would you like the ones you have to be more engaged for better retention? District 5400 is currently working on better and more efficient platforms for the 43 groups in our district to connect with each other, our communities, and the international community.
Social Media has hundreds of platforms to partner with, but for now, we are going to start focusing on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Use these to:
Cal Dillabaugh recently received Nampa Rotary’s second Community Impact Paul Harris Fellow in what is an annual award. The Rotary Club of Nampa chose a nonmember who lives by Rotary’s Four Way Test: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Each year many children in Southeast Idaho are rescued from dangerous home environments. It often happens with no notice, and for many of these children the only packing option is to throw belongings into a plastic trash bag to take to the foster home. Pocatello-Portneuf Rotary’s Suitcases 4 Kids initiative remedies that by providing every one of these children with a new or gently used suitcase, duffel bag, backpack, or diaper bag of their very own.
Club Presidents and other officers - Are you looking for a way to develop new leaders in your club? Are you looking for a way to develop outstanding committee chairpersons and committee members? Rotary Leadership Institute is your answer. This is a proven program designed to train and motivate new and experienced club members in Rotary. The program helps to understand many aspects of Rotary beyond the club meeting as well as training basic leadership skills. The program covers the areas of Leadership, Rotary Foundation, Team Building, Public Image and Public Relations, Attracting Members, Engaging Members, Club Communication, My Rotary World, and Making a Difference.
The RLI program is by invitation of the club president and there are limited openings. The cost is $100.00 for the 9-hour course and this is typically paid by the club. There will be two sessions, one in East Idaho and one in West Idaho with dates to be announced soon.

No new Polio Cases reported this week.
Could 2016 be the year of the final Polio case?
2015-16 Congratulations! As a consequence of your generosity and the effort of your clubs' Rotarians, Rotary will be able to allocate a full $105 million in polio grants this coming year.
The 2016-17 Rotary Foundation Centennial Year has arrived with a per-Rotary Club Goal of $2,650 and a total Rotary raised Polio giving goal of $45 Million. What a great gift we are giving to the children of the world - with over 15 million children walking which would have been paralyzed by Polio without your help!

What is the district match? District 5400, using proceeds from the cruise raffle we hold in May, will match the first $100 of a donor’s Paul Harris Fellow. Here’s how it works:
All donors to TRF are eligible, Rotarian or not, as long as they’re affiliated with a club
Donor has reached or passed the threshold of the first $100 of his/her Paul Harris Fellow ($100, $1100, $2100, etc.) within the last 12 months
Donor has made a cash contribution within the last 12 months.
Someone from the club has requested the match from the district by providing verification of eligibility using Club Recognition Summary Report from The Rotary Foundation
We need your help to find candidates from your local high school to go on exchange in 2017-18.
Although it’s a year away, we need to start the process now to allow time for interviews, selection, placement, and training. Between now and mid-September, students need to submit their initial applications and interview with Rotary clubs. In October we will gather paperwork clubs' nominees, and in early November, we will make district-wide selections. Selected students will depart for their new temporary homes in August 2017.
Boise Sunrise Rotary and Boise Southwest Rotary are pleased to present the 8th Annual LobsterFest Fundraiser on Friday, September 9. All proceeds from this evening of great food and fun directly benefit charitable organizations in the Treasure Valley, including Hope House, as well as Rotary youth programs.
The Idaho Falls Rotary Club will sponsor its 26th Annual Great Snake River Greenbelt Duck Race (that's right, 26th) on Saturday, August 13th with a whole bunch of fun activities. Over those years the event has raised more than $2 million to support a variety of Greenbelt projects. You can participate! Find out more here: http://ifrotary.org/ducks/
