WE ARE HERE

Greetings, Fellow Rotarians!

A little while ago, I was in Salt Lake City, Utah with my family enjoying their lovely downtown area.  As I was crossing the street, I noticed a new piece of artwork in front of the Salt Palace that caught my attention.  Risking my life while hearing my wife and children’s pleas to complete the journey to the safety of the sidewalk, I deftly removed my phone, waited for a break in the moving traffic, and took this photo of the “You are Here” art installation.

This unique sculpture contains over 150 diametrically opposed phrases with “YOU ARE HERE” imposed on some of them in red, pointing to a bench.  As you zoom in, you can see some of the phrases contained therein:

I really enjoyed the meaning of this piece of art the more I contemplated it.  As many know, Utah is considered the “Crossroads of the West,” and was made a pioneer settlement after Brigham Young famously declared “This is the place.” Using polar opposite phrases within each individual sign allows emphasis to be made to each of these completely different ideas. In a way, we are all somewhere in life in between two extremes of one sort or another. And in perceived contradictions, we can all achieve unity when we come together. By recognizing that we are at some sort of crossroads of our own, we can all come together to realize that this is the place for us because we are exactly where we need to be.

Recently, the world has been in turmoil and oppositions exist because there are a lot of opposites.  Herein lies the magic and beauty of Rotary.  No matter who we are or where we are from, we come together as individuals to make a Club.  And each of our Clubs can make a difference for good in ourselves, in our communities, and in the world.  Where else can people with diametrically opposed religious beliefs, philosophies, political leanings, financial differences, age gaps, and perceptions come together and change the world for good?  That is the power of Rotary!  And we, our communities, and our world all need Rotary now more than ever.

As I begin this privilege of being your District Governor for this brand new Rotary year, I am looking forward to coming together (whoever, whatever, whenever, and wherever we are) and then work together to Grow Rotary.  We are here together, at these crossroads, and there is no other place I would rather be.  Let’s Grow Rotary!

Sincerely,

GOVERNOR BEN

Ben Nelson '20-'21 District 5400 Governor

emmett youth benefit dinner & auction
has been rescheduled to Sept 19,2020
Due to the current health concerns for our community, and recommendations of the CDC, the 2020 Emmett Rotary Youth Benefit Dinner and Auction has been POSTPONED.  It will now be held on September 19, 2020 at the Gem County Fairgrounds.

We are excited to announce that the flamingos will continue to flock our Sponsor businesses throughout the next few months as we continue to let others know YOU support our youth!

Meanwhile, youth groups will continue to sell Raffle tickets until right before the auction.  This is a great opportunity for each to earn money for their group.  The youth groups get 50 cents for each raffle ticket they sell.  That profit is over and above what the group has requested from the actual auction funds.

Thank you for your support of this event that funds activities for the youth of Gem County.  We still have room for Sponsors at $500 which includes dinner for six, free raffle tickets, free bucket draw tickets and entry into a drawing for $600. Individual tickets are available at $60 each by contacting Kathy at klrainbow49@gmail.com.  We look forward to seeing you on September 19.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact John Buck, 208-369-1785 or klrainbow49@gmail.com.
lobsterghost
online auction
october 13-23, 2020
The Boise Sunrise club  has operated a successful fundraiser called the Lobsterfest for ten years with the Nampa, Boise Southwest and Eagle Garden City clubs. Traditionally it has been a dinner auction event, recently with 450 guests and revenues of $240,000. Due to current events; it has been converted to an online event, we opened it up to all clubs in the District 5400 and we tentatively renamed it the “The District 5400 LobsterGhost”.

The LobsterGhost will be an online auction; with opportunities to donate to your club, the District, Rotary International, the paddle-up charity (the Hope House) and up to ten guest charities. Participating clubs can nominate guest charities. The Expenses (approximately 5% of revenue for a professional auction management  company) will be shared based or revenue.

There will be no charge for a club to register or for one to visit the website. Participating clubs will have no financial risk and will not be asked to have a minimum level of participation. One or one hundred members from a club can participate. Each participant will be asked to identify his or her club.

The net profits of auction items will be shared 50/50 between the donating club and the club associated with the buyer of the auction item.
