Each year in September, the Eagle-Garden City Rotary Club looks for a sponsor to help to purchase and distribute dictionaries to area third graders to demonstrate their commitment to education and Idaho’s children.
At the beginning of each school year, the Eagle-Garden City club orders special dictionaries from The Dictionary Project. Once the 792 dictionaries arrived last year, representatives from the club and credit union delivered them to the third-grade classrooms in nine local elementary schools, a rewarding activity to be sure:
- Eagle Hills Elementary
- Eagle Elementary
- Galileo Math and Science
- Pierce Park Elementary
- Rolling Hills Charter
- Seven Oaks Elementary
- Shadow Hills Elementary
- Star Elementary
- River Valley Elementary
As well as lists of words, these dictionaries also include interesting facts about the world and the United States. Students are especially thrilled to find the page with the English language’s longest word! For some students, this dictionary is prized because it’s the only book they own.
