August is Membership Month, and I’d like to suggest we think about membership a little differently.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the opportunity to visit clubs across District 5400. I’ve sold buffalo burgers at Miners Jubilee in Baker City, helped with concessions (cooked 22 pounds of onions) for hamburgers at the Bear Lake Car Show, hung out with Rotarians producing the Preston Pioneer Day Fireworks Show, and spent time with Rotarians who quietly make their towns stronger year after year.
What I’ve discovered is that people don’t join Rotary because we’re looking for members. They join because they’re looking for purpose, connection, and a chance to make a difference.
When we invite someone to Rotary, we’re not asking them to attend another meeting. We’re inviting them into friendships, service, and the opportunity to become part of something that has been strengthening communities for generations.
This month, I hope each of us will simply notice someone. Someone who enjoys serving others. Someone who brings people together. Someone who would make our club better—not because we need another member (that’s true but not the point), but because Rotary might become an important part of their life.
The best invitation is always personal.
It begins with a conversation, grows through a relationship, and sometimes changes a life.
Let’s continue building clubs where people feel they belong—and then invite others to experience that same sense of purpose and community.
