How can we strengthen our clubs, develop our communities, and care for the planet—all at the same time? Rotarians from across the globe came together at the Rotary International Convention (RICON) to explore just that.
This year, Rotarians gathered one day early for an inspiring pre-convention event: Building a Better World. With strong attendance and dynamic speakers like Rotary International President Stephanie Urchick and David Miller, CEO of C40 Cities, participants collaborated on real-world solutions that align environmental stewardship with economic development.
Hosted by two of Rotary’s action groups—ESRAG (Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group) and RAGCED (Rotary Action Group for Community Economic Development)—this full-day forum showcased how we can create lasting, sustainable projects. Rotarians brought their current club initiatives and received expert guidance on making them more effective, resilient, and impactful.

The convention also featured internationally acclaimed climatologist Dr. Katharine Hayhoe, who delivered a standing-room-only session at the Rotary Environment Hub. Her accessible, fact-based message affirmed what many Rotarians know instinctively: caring for our environment strengthens our communities and economies.
In the Peace Park garden, visitors found beautiful displays representing ESRAG’s six action themes: biodiversity, circular economy, climate, food systems, pollution, and sustainable living. Dr. Hayhoe herself was spotted capturing photos of these exhibits—reminding us that science and Rotary values are deeply connected.
Perhaps most tellingly, the ESRAG booth welcomed nearly 100 new members—triple the number from any previous convention. That kind of growth highlights a powerful truth: Rotarians are drawn to meaningful service that honors both people and planet.
If your club is looking for ways to grow membership, enhance service projects, or boost your return on investment for community work, consider integrating sustainability. Today’s Rotarians—and tomorrow’s—are eager to lead with purpose, build strong local economies, and leave a legacy of environmental responsibility.
After all, building a better world isn’t a sideline. It’s at the heart of what Rotary does best.
