The school bells are ringing in Emmett as I write this. School has started for another year. Parents are torn between putting their children on the bus and spending some “me time” with a cup of coffee and maybe the daily news.
Having worked in the school system for over 30 years and being a parent, I understand. The excitement of the 1st grader almost overshadows that of the high school senior. Kids are kids – no matter the age. They all need a safe haven at home AND at school. The power of encouragement and praise is worthy of every child, every day.
According to information on page 45 of the July Rotary magazine, “More than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate. Our goal is to strengthen the capacities of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy.”

Rotary can be a source of that support and encouragement for kids of all ages. I am thrilled to hear about the Every Day Leadership program the Boise Sunrise club has developed in several Boise elementary schools, the Dictionary Distribution happening in many school districts, the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Program, Rotary Youth Exchange, and the formation of Interact Clubs throughout our District. It’s an exciting time for all of us to reach out to these wonderful human beings who will someday rule our world. Don’t we want the best for them?
I encourage each of us to get involved with the youth in your city/town – there are always opportunities. Sometimes, they only need someone to listen and help them dream their dreams.
Enjoy working with our young people! You will grow from the experience!
