District 5400 Clubs Lead the Way for Lithium

District 5400 Rotary Clubs have proven it’s true: the greatest lithium mines in the world are the junk drawers of America!

During April, Rotary Clubs of Nampa, Boise, Boise-Southwest, and Pocatello Centennial Rotary held lithium-ion battery collection drives in their communities. Coordinated by our D5400 Environmental Sustainability Action Team (ESAT), these events were held at coffee shops and high schools, in conjunction with student groups. Over 450 pounds of lithium-ion batteries and devices were collected!

Through the Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group (ESRAG), Rotary has a partnership with Redwood Materials. Based in Nevada, Redwood has developed recycling technology which enables recovering 95% of the lithium and cobalt. We now have a USA contained supply chain for batteries, as our economy continues to electrify!
