In February, a team of 19 dedicated Rotarians, including spouses, from four clubs in our District, returned from a life-changing humanitarian trip to Peru. This diverse group, representing the Pocatello, Pocatello Centennial, Pocatello Gate City, and Boise Rotary Clubs, raised over $20,000 for various projects aimed at improving the lives of Peruvian communities.
Team members left to right 1st row: Rich & Kathy Kirkham, Kirsten Nickisch, Magali Saunders, Kate Fornarotto. 2nd row: Elizabeth Stein, Lisa Armijo, Deb & Jeffy Myers, Natalia, Doug Alley. 3rd row: John Fornarotto, Jared Stein, Mike Sanders, Todd Fischer, Aaron Moore, Jedd and Karen Thomas.
The team’s efforts were expertly led by Magali Saunders, a native of Peru, whose passion for her country, the Rotary mission, and her love for each team member was evident throughout the trip. Todd Fischer, a past chairman of the District Foundation Committee, praised Magali’s leadership, saying, “Magali’s enthusiasm for service and positive attitude were truly infectious. Her tireless dedication ensured that every team member was fully engaged in our activities, making our trip unforgettable.”
Rich Kirkham, the chairman of the World Service Committee and a past District Governor, commented on the experience, saying, “We forged new friendships and enjoyed incredible fellowship during our journey. We had the opportunity to work on multiple service projects, visit several Rotary Clubs, and savored the delicious flavors of Peruvian cuisine. I’m eagerly anticipating our next trip.”
The Rotarian team supported a wide array of projects, including:
- Delivering 12 wheelchairs to a local hospital
- Providing support for a cancer recovery center
- Donating instruments to a children’s music school
- Participating in a benefit concert
- Purchasing and planting 10,000 trees
- Supporting a cafeteria in a remote village for individuals with disabilities
When asked if they would return to Peru, Rich Kirkham responded without hesitation, “Absolutely, in a heartbeat!” The team’s unwavering commitment to service and the lasting impact of their projects are a testament to the spirit of Rotary and its mission to make the world a better place.
