Rotary clubs do amazing work every day. From scholarships and youth programs to community service projects and fundraisers, there is no shortage of stories worth sharing. The challenge is making sure people hear those stories.
Facebook and Instagram are two of the most effective tools available to help clubs increase visibility, attract prospective members, strengthen community relationships, and support fundraising efforts. District 5400 leadership has also emphasized utilizing Facebook, Instagram, district resources, and club storytelling to better showcase the impact Rotary is making across our communities.
Best Practices for Social Media Success
- Post consistently.
A club that posts once a week will generally stay far more visible than one that only posts before a fundraiser. Share service projects, member spotlights, scholarships, youth programs, meeting highlights, and community partnerships.
- Tell stories, don’t just announce events.
People connect with people. Instead of simply promoting an event, share who will benefit, why the project matters, and the impact Rotary is making.
- Use photos whenever possible.
Posts with photos consistently receive more engagement than text-only posts. Capture members in action, volunteers serving, students receiving awards, and community members benefiting from Rotary projects.
- Tag partners and sponsors.
When appropriate, tag community organizations, businesses, schools, and fellow Rotary clubs. This helps expand your reach and introduces Rotary to new audiences. Please consider including @Rotary5400 to reach our district followers. Tag Rotary International when the story could have a broader reach.
- Celebrate your members.
Recognizing volunteers, Paul Harris Fellows, scholarship recipients, and community leaders creates positive engagement while highlighting Rotary’s values.
- Promote fundraisers with a clear call to action.
Whether you’re selling tickets, seeking sponsors, or raising money for a project, make it easy for people to know exactly how they can help.
Why Social Media Helps Membership Growth
Many prospective members will look at a club’s Facebook page before ever attending a meeting. An active and welcoming social media presence helps people see:
- The impact your club is making
- The members who are involved
- The projects you support
- The fun and fellowship that Rotary offers
If your page hasn’t been updated in months, visitors may assume the club isn’t active. A vibrant social presence demonstrates that Rotary is alive, relevant, and making a difference.
Why Social Media Helps Fundraising
Fundraising succeeds when people understand the mission. Facebook and Instagram allow clubs to tell the story behind the fundraiser, show results from previous efforts, thank sponsors publicly, and reach supporters well beyond club membership.
The more frequently your community sees Rotary’s positive impact, the more likely they are to support your next event, sponsorship opportunity, or service project.
Need Help? Drop In to Public Image Office Hours
As District 5400’s Public Image Chair, I am committed to helping clubs strengthen their communications and tell their stories more effectively. Beginning this Rotary year, I will host a bi-monthly Public Image Open Office Hour on Teams where any Rotarian can drop in to:
- Ask questions about Facebook, Instagram, or ClubRunner
- Get feedback or help on club marketing materials
- Learn best practices for promoting events and fundraisers
- Share successful projects and strategies
- Find resources available through Rotary and District 5400
Please email me at Stephanie.Curtis@imail.org if you’d like to receive these Teams meeting invitations. They’ll be sent out regularly to your club president, so you can also ask your president to forward them to you.
Whether you’re a seasoned public image volunteer or just getting started, these sessions are designed to be informal, collaborative, and helpful. Bring your questions, your challenges, and your ideas. Together, we can help tell Rotary’s story and showcase the incredible work happening throughout District 5400.
Every project has a story. Every club has an impact. Let’s make sure our communities know about it.
