All Aboard for an Incredible Journey!

Rotarians and friends from across District 5400 gathered together on May 29-30 for our 2026 Rotary District 5400 annual conference, embracing this year’s train theme as we celebrated service, leadership, fellowship, and the many ways Rotary continues to make a difference in our communities.

One of the greatest highlights of the conference was the spirit of fellowship that filled every event whether sharing ideas between and during sessions or doing one of our incredible service projects at the local, district or international levels. We enjoyed inspiring speakers, meaningful discussions within our Same Size Club groupings and reconnecting with friends across the District. The energy in every session reminded me that Rotary’s strength comes from people who are willing to climb aboard, work together and help move our District forward.

Friday evening began with an impactful presentation by Wyn Spiller, Rotary International Director for Zones 26 & 27. Wyn challenged and encouraged attendees to think deeply about Rotary’s future and the role each of us plays in strengthening our clubs, supporting our communities and expanding Rotary’s reach. Her message resonated throughout the conference and left attendees energized and inspired.

The evening also included a delightful and entertaining appearance by “Mr. and Mrs. Paul Harris” portrayed by two talented members of our own District 5400 family. Their performance brought Rotary history to life while providing plenty of laughter!

Saturday continued the journey with opportunities for learning, sharing ideas and celebrating the many accomplishments taking place throughout the district. A highlight both days was the appearance and involvement of our Rotary Youth Exchange students – both those who have been in Idaho for nearly a year and those who will soon be traveling outside the country to visit other countries.

A highlight of Saturday evening was hearing our “own” Curt Bowen’s presentation about his work in Guatemala. Through stories and firsthand experiences, Curt shared how communities are being empowered to help themselves through sustainable agricultural practices, including raising corn to improve food security and create opportunities for long-term success. His presentation reminded us that meaningful service is not simply about providing assistance- it is about helping people build a better future for themselves and their families.

Another highlight came during Foundation Chair Ben Nelson’s presentation. Using the beloved story of the Little Engine That Could, Ben challenged attendees to consider the impact of Rotary’s Foundation and the power of individual commitment.

As the District 5400 conference came to a close, attendees departed with renewed purpose, fresh ideas, and a simple but powerful reminder from Kent M. Keith’s Paradoxical Commandments: when the track seems difficult, when the work feels challenging, and when the destination appears distant – Do It Anyway.

Throughout the conference, one theme remained constant: Rotary works best when we work together. Like the cars of the train connected on a common track our clubs, members, and leaders move farther and accomplish more when united by a shared purpose.

The train may have left the station, but the journey continues. All aboard for another year of service, leadership and making a difference.
